MEDAL PLAY

Medal Play tournaments are held monthly in a stroke play format. They are organized in 4 flights, Men's 1st (0-17 handicap), Men's 2nd (18-36 handicap), a Women's flight (0-40) and Senior's flight for men over 50 years of age. Top prizes are awarded for Tournament Low Gross and Tournament Low Net. Additional prizes are given for Low Gross and Low Net in each flight and a special award goes to the player making the fewest putts in the round.

In an awards ceremony at the annual Christmas dinner in December prizes are presented to many players in recognition of their outstanding performances in Medal Play tournaments throughout the year. To be eligible for a prize a player must have competed in at least 6 Medal Play competitions or 4 Medal Play events and the 2 rounds of the St. Maarten Open.

Medal Play Tournament scores also are used to select the players who form the team SMGA sends to the annual ECGA championships. (see more under "ECGA tournament")

ST. MAARTEN OPEN

The Open, usually held in late April around the time of the Dutch side Carnival, or in early May, is the island's biggest golf event of the year, attracting well over 100 players, approximately half of whom come from off island. Players begin arriving in mid-week in time to enjoy a practice round. They must register Friday before play begins early Saturday morning.

The two-day stroke play competition features a Championship flight, 2 men's flights, two seniors' flights and 1 women's flight. At a ceremony after play Sunday afternoon about 40 prizes are awarded to the winners.

The entry fee of $180 includes green fees for two days of tournament play and one practice round, a Friday night cocktail party, a goody bag of donated prizes including a free tournament shirt for every player, free lunches at the course on Saturday and Sunday, and a popular Sunday afternoon buffet.

With strong support from community sponsors, the Open raises funds for SMGA support of various programs of community organizations.

MOONLIGHT GOLF

At least once a year we play golf in the dark! Well not exactly when it's totally dark because we pick a weekend night close to a full moon that will be reflecting off the lagoon and adding illumination to the golf course. What a unique experience to play with fluorescent balls that streak across the sky to greens you can barely see. Players carry flashlights as they make their way carefully around the course to avoid a stumble into the lagoon. The tournament is played in a fun-filled 9-hole scramble format.

CONCORDIA TROPHY

Concordia, a location in Marigot, is where the French and Dutch met in the 17th century to reach the famous accord dividing the island into two peaceful territories, the way it has remained for more than 350 years. Each year teams of approximately 15 of the best golfers from each side of the island face off in a two-day competition modeled after the famed Ryder Cup matches. The winning team walks away with possession of the Concordia Trophy, which they keep for one year as champions of the island

ANNUAL SANTA SCRAMBLE

More than 100 players, adorned in obligatory Santa Claus hats, gather at the course for this final festive tournament of the year. The format is a four-player scramble made up of teams mostly organized by the players themselves.

Generous prizes are awarded to the top teams and a special award is presented to the team with the best decorated cart. But the biggest winner in this wild and wooly celebration is the community organization or organizations selected by SMGA to receive a donation from the tournament profits. The entry fee is $75 per player.
